:: Dependant GPS:
These receive satellite signals, but need another device, (a PDA, Laptop, Mobile phone, etc) to process and interpret the information received via software. They are classified depending on the type of connection used by each device; either by Bluetooth, Cable, CF (Compact Flash), SD (Secure Digital), etc.
:: Dedicated GPS:
These receivers function in a self sufficient manner, since they are designed exclusively to serve the specific purpose of a GPS navigator; such as marking points, navigating to them, calculating distances, etc... They have their own display and function with batteries, (either alkaline or rechargeable), so that they can be transported easily. They are divided into two categories: "basic GPS", (with no possibility of loading maps), and "GPS with maps", (that include a base map and can support detailed cartography).
:: GPS / GSM / GPRS:
These are devices that send GPS positioning information via the GSM or GPRS network. They are used for mobile tracking solutions, such as fleet management or for tracking people, cars, pets, etc. In other cases they can be used to access the GPRS traffic information service, also the GPRS port can be used for connecting to the Internet.
